I understand your approach although I myself don’t agree with it. My job as a parent was to prepare my children for adulthood. I didn’t pay for my children to do chores unless the chores were big. However, I slowly let them take over the job of paying for necessities with money that I gave them (and that I would have spent on them anyway). It was my job to teach them financial responsibility. Just as I stopped doing their laundry when they became teens, I also stopped making financial decisions for them as they reached an appropriate age.
