What if you looked at this from another angle? Is it your parents who are controlling you or is it you who is letting yourself be controlled by other people’s money? But that money comes at a high price. Guilt is so expensive and so is having to listen to suggestions to improve your situation after parents give you money. When we were newlyweds my parents bought Christmas gifts from me to my husband. (I was a student at the time.) I hated the idea since my husband and I shared a joint account and I wanted to buy my own gifts for my husband. My parents didn’t get why I thought it was a bad idea. They thought I should be grateful.
